DIY Vinyl Plank Flooring Installation: Step-by-Step Guide
Install luxury vinyl plank flooring yourself with this step-by-step guide. Tools needed, prep work, cutting tips, and common mistakes to avoid.
Can you really DIY vinyl plank?
Yes. Click-lock luxury vinyl plank is one of the most DIY-friendly flooring options available. No glue, no nails — just click the planks together.
Most homeowners can complete a 200-300 sqft room in a single day with basic tools.
Tools and materials
You need: tape measure, utility knife, T-square or straight edge, spacers (most products include them), rubber mallet, pull bar, and a pencil.
Optional but helpful: miter saw or jigsaw for complex cuts, knee pads for comfort, and a chalk line for keeping rows straight.
Prep work
Remove existing flooring or confirm you can install over it. Clean the subfloor thoroughly — any debris under the floor will telegraph through.
Check subfloor flatness: use a 6-foot straight edge. Variations over 3/16 inch need to be leveled. SPC flooring is more forgiving than WPC on uneven surfaces.
Acclimate planks in the room for 48 hours before installation.
Installation steps
1. Start from the longest wall. Use spacers to leave a 1/4 inch expansion gap around all walls and fixed objects.
2. Click the first row together end-to-end. Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between rows.
3. Angle each plank at about 20 degrees and press down to click into the previous row.
4. Use a pull bar for the last plank in each row. Cut planks as needed with a utility knife (score and snap).
5. Install transitions at doorways and remove spacers when complete. Add baseboards or quarter round to cover expansion gaps.
Common mistakes to avoid
Not leaving expansion gaps (causes buckling). Not staggering joints enough (looks unnatural and creates weak points). Starting on a short wall instead of the longest wall. Forcing planks that are not fully clicked (leads to gaps later).
Take your time on the first two rows — they set the foundation for the entire floor.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to install LVP?
A 200-300 sqft room takes most DIYers 4-8 hours. Larger spaces or complex layouts may take a full weekend.
Do I need underlayment?
Many SPC products have pre-attached underlayment. If yours does not, add a thin vapor barrier underlayment — especially on concrete subfloors.
