How it compares to our other vinyl plank
The wear layer is what stops scratches; the core thickness is how solid the floor feels. The 8mm / 28 mil plank tops both.

A tougher wear layer than name-brand premium vinyl, for less
Name-brand premium vinyl lines like COREtec and Shaw list at $6.69 to $9.09 a square foot with a 20 mil wear layer.* Ours is 8mm with a 28 mil wear layer for $3.49.
*Brand list prices on each brand's website, checked October 2026.
How to check a plank's real wear layer
- Millimeters and mils are different numbers. "8mm" is the whole plank. "28 mil" is only the clear wear layer on top, about 0.7 mm. A thick plank can still have a thin wear layer.
- Look for the mil number on the box or spec sheet. If a listing gives only the plank thickness, ask for the wear layer before you compare prices.
- Compare like for like. Price a 28 mil plank against other 28 mil planks, not against a 12 or 20 mil plank of the same thickness.

(512) 355-5120Questions about the 8mm / 28mil plank
What makes the 8mm / 28 mil plank our best vinyl plank?
It is the thickest, toughest plank we sell: an 8mm rigid core with a 28 mil wear layer, the commercial end of the wear-layer scale, in long 9" x 60" planks. The wear layer is diamond-coated for scratch resistance, and the plank is kid and pet friendly and ink resistant.
How much does 8mm / 28 mil vinyl plank cost?
$3.49 per square foot, or $5.24 per square foot installed by our own crews over a sound, level slab. Contractors can ask for contractor pricing.
What does 28 mil mean on vinyl plank?
Mil is a thousandth of an inch, and it measures the clear wear layer on top of the plank, not the whole plank. A 28 mil wear layer is 0.028 inch, about 0.7 mm. For comparison, 12 mil is about 0.3 mm and 20 mil is about 0.5 mm.
Is 28 mil better than 20 mil?
For wear, yes. The wear layer is what takes scratches and foot traffic, so 28 mil holds up longer than 20 mil in busy homes, homes with big dogs, rentals and light commercial spaces. For bedrooms and quieter rooms, 20 mil is plenty.
Is 8mm / 28 mil commercial grade?
Yes. A 28 mil wear layer is commercial grade, so it suits busy homes, rentals, offices and retail spaces as well as homes with big dogs.
Is a thicker vinyl plank better?
Thickness and wear layer do different jobs. The 8mm core feels more solid underfoot and bridges small slab imperfections better than a thin plank; the 28 mil wear layer is what resists scratches and wear. This plank gives you both.
Where can I buy 8mm / 28 mil vinyl plank in the Austin area?
At our Liberty Hill showroom, 126 Holmes Rd Unit 24, which serves Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown and Round Rock, and at our Waco warehouse. Both stores have samples of every color.
Can I get the same floor again later?
Yes. This is a running line, not a closeout, so you can come back later to add a room or replace planks with the same floor.
Is it in stock?
This line is custom ordered from the manufacturer and is ready in about 3 to 5 days. We measure and install in the same week, and a 1,000 sq ft job is usually done in 1 day.
Can you ship it outside Texas?
Yes. Online orders ship by LTL freight from the manufacturer to the lower 48 states, with the freight cost shown at checkout.
