What the wear layer is
The wear layer is the clear top coat that protects the printed wood look on vinyl plank. It is measured in mil, or thousandths of an inch. It is the single biggest factor in how well a plank holds up to dog nails, chair legs and grit tracked in from outside.
Do not confuse it with total thickness, measured in millimeters. A 5mm plank and an 8mm plank can have very different wear layers.
12 mil: budget rooms
Good for bedrooms, guest rooms, closets and budget rentals with light traffic. It shows wear sooner under large dogs or heavy foot traffic.
Our 5mm / 12 mil rigid core is $1.70 per square foot, or $3.45 installed.
20 mil: the sweet spot for most homes
Commercial-grade and the best value for most family homes, including homes with cats and smaller dogs.
Our Made in USA 5mm / 20 mil American Series is $1.99 per square foot for in-stock colors, or $3.74 installed. It is a running line, so you can get the same floor again later.
22 mil: a step tougher, in a wide plank
A little more wear protection in a long 9 inch by 60 inch plank that makes rooms look bigger.
Our Made in USA 6.5mm / 22 mil wide plank is $2.79 per square foot, or $4.54 installed.
28 mil: the toughest we sell
For big dogs, busy households, short-term rentals and light commercial spaces. Our 8mm plank has a diamond-coated 28 mil wear layer, 9 inch by 60 inch planks, and is kid and pet friendly and ink resistant. Most Austin-area flooring stores do not carry a 28 mil plank.
It is $3.49 per square foot, or $5.24 installed by our own crews.

Frequently asked questions
What wear layer do I need for vinyl plank flooring?
For bedrooms, guest rooms and budget rentals, 12 mil works. For most family homes and homes with pets, 20 mil is the sweet spot. For big dogs, busy households, short-term rentals and light commercial use, choose 22 to 28 mil.
Is 28 mil better than 20 mil?
Yes, for scratch and wear resistance. A 28 mil wear layer is the thickest we sell and is commercial grade. Our 8mm / 28 mil plank also has a diamond-coated wear layer and 9 inch by 60 inch planks.
Does a thicker plank mean a thicker wear layer?
No. Total thickness (mm) and wear layer (mil) are separate. The core thickness affects how solid the floor feels; the wear layer is what resists scratches and wear.
How much more does a thicker wear layer cost?
At 254 Floors: 12 mil $1.70, Made in USA 20 mil $1.99, Made in USA 22 mil wide plank $2.79, and 8mm / 28 mil wide plank $3.49 per square foot. Installation by our own crews is $1.75 per square foot.
