Best Flooring for Dogs and Pets (Including Dogs That Pee): Scratch-Resistant, Waterproof Vinyl Plank

Carpet absorbs urine into the pad, so the smell comes back. Hardwood and laminate can stain, swell or cup where accidents sit. Waterproof rigid core vinyl plank keeps urine on the surface, where you wipe it up.

For a dog that is still house training, an older dog, or a pet with a medical issue: choose rigid core vinyl plank with tight click joints, wipe accidents promptly so nothing sits in the seams, and clean with a pH-neutral or enzyme cleaner made for hard floors. Skip steam mops, which can push moisture into the joints.

Engineered hardwood looks beautiful, but its surface is wood. In rooms where accidents happen, vinyl plank is the safer choice.

A good pet floor needs three things: a tough wear layer for scratches, a waterproof core for accidents, and a surface that cleans with a damp mop.

The wear layer is the clear top coat over the printed wood look, measured in mil (thousandths of an inch). It is the single biggest factor in how a vinyl plank holds up to dog nails.

12 mil: a good budget floor for bedrooms, guest rooms and rentals. It works with cats and small dogs, but shows wear sooner with large dogs.

20 mil: commercial-grade, and the sweet spot for most pet homes.

22 mil: a step up for big dogs and busy households, in a wide 9" x 60" plank.

28 mil: the toughest we sell. Our 8mm premium plank has a diamond-coated 28 mil wear layer for scratch resistance, and it is kid and pet friendly and ink resistant.

5mm rigid core with a 12 mil wear layer: $1.70 per sq ft, or $3.45 installed.

Made in USA 5mm with a 20 mil wear layer: $1.99 per sq ft, or $3.74 installed.

Made in USA 6.5mm wide plank with a 22 mil wear layer: $2.79 per sq ft, or $4.54 installed.

8mm premium wide plank with a 28 mil diamond-coated wear layer: $3.49 per sq ft, or $5.24 installed.

Installed prices include our own crews at $1.75 per sq ft over a sound, level slab. Tear-out, leveling, stairs and trim are quoted after a measure. Contractors can ask for contractor pricing.

Example: a 500 sq ft living room and hallway in the 8mm / 28 mil plank. Material for 550 sq ft (10% extra for cuts) at $3.49 is $1,919.50, plus installation of 500 sq ft at $1.75 is $875, for about $2,795 before tear-out or leveling.

The same space in Made in USA 20 mil plank is 550 sq ft at $1.99 ($1,094.50) plus $875 installation, about $1,970.

Keep nails trimmed and put felt pads under furniture and crate feet. Wipe up accidents instead of letting them sit, and use a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Skip steam mops and wax.

Put a mat under water and food bowls, and a walk-off mat at the door you use after walks. Most scratching comes from grit tracked inside, not from the dog.
