How Much Flooring Do I Need? Measure Your Rooms and Count Boxes
How to measure a room for vinyl plank, how much extra to order for cuts, and how to turn square feet into boxes, with worked examples using real box sizes from 254 Floors.
By 254 Floors • Published
Step 1: measure each room
Measure the length and width of each room in feet, wall to wall, and multiply them. A 12 ft by 15 ft room is 180 square feet.
Add closets, hallways and pantries as their own small rectangles. Split L-shaped rooms into two rectangles and add them.
Step 2: add 10% for cuts
Every row needs end cuts, and doorways and closets add more. Add about 10% for a straight layout.
Example: 180 sq ft plus 10% is 198 sq ft.
Step 3: turn square feet into boxes
Divide by the square feet in one box and round up. Box sizes differ by line, which is why the same room can take a different number of boxes:
Made in USA 5mm / 20 mil: 23.64 sq ft per box. 198 sq ft is 8.4, so 9 boxes.
Made in USA 6.5mm / 22 mil wide plank: 22.44 sq ft per box. 198 sq ft is 8.8, so 9 boxes.
8mm / 28 mil wide plank: 18.87 sq ft per box. 198 sq ft is 10.5, so 11 boxes.
Each product page lists its box coverage, and our cost calculator does the math for you.
Common mistakes
Forgetting closets and hallways.
Ordering exactly the room size with nothing extra, then running short on a custom-ordered color.
Mixing boxes from different orders: buy everything for a project at once.
Keep a box or two after the job for future repairs. Our featured lines are running lines, so you can also get the same floor again later.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
About 10% extra for straight installs, to cover cuts and mistakes. Rooms with lots of angles, closets or a diagonal layout need more, so ask us when we measure.
How do I calculate how many boxes I need?
Multiply length by width for each room, add them up, add 10%, then divide by the square feet in one box and round up to a whole box.
Can you measure for me?
Yes. If we install your floor, we measure the rooms and check the slab before quoting, usually in the same week as the install.
