Who installs it

254 Floors sells Bjelin engineered hardwood and our own insured crews install it, around our Liberty Hill showroom (Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock and the North Austin area) and our Waco warehouse. One company handles the measure, the floor and the installation.

Step 1: the measure and the slab

Most Central Texas homes sit on a concrete slab, so the slab decides the prep. We check flatness with a long straight edge, look for cracks, and check moisture. Low spots are filled and high spots ground down before any wood goes down.

Old carpet, tile or vinyl comes out first. Tear-out and leveling are priced with the measure.

Step 2: following the product's instructions

Engineered floors each have their own instructions for acclimation, underlayment and vapor barrier over concrete. We follow them exactly, because that is what the warranty is written around.

Step 3: laying the floor

Bjelin planks join with 5G dry locking, a click system with no glue, and float over the underlayment with an expansion gap at every wall and fixed object. Long planks (up to 93.6") and wide planks (up to 10.7") need a flat slab, which is why step 1 matters.

Herringbone is laid out from a center line and squared to the room, then filled in. It takes longer than straight planks and is quoted that way.

Step 4: trim and transitions

Baseboards or shoe molding cover the expansion gap, door casings are undercut so the floor slides beneath, and color-matched transitions finish doorways and changes to tile or carpet. Trim is fastened to the wall, never to the floating floor.

Engineered wood or vinyl plank?

Engineered hardwood is real wood for living areas. For kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and pet-accident zones, waterproof vinyl plank is the safer choice, from $1.70 per sq ft, installed by the same crews at $1.75 per sq ft over a sound, level slab.

Frequently asked questions

How is engineered hardwood installed on a concrete slab?

Most click-lock engineered wood, including the Bjelin floors we carry, floats over the slab: the planks lock together and rest on an underlayment, with no nails in the concrete. The slab is checked for flatness and moisture first, and the underlayment and vapor barrier follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How much does engineered hardwood installation cost?

It depends on the room shape, the pattern (herringbone takes more work than straight planks), slab leveling, tear-out, stairs and trim. Our crews price engineered hardwood installation after a measure. Call either store to set one up.

Does engineered hardwood need to acclimate?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific floor. Many engineered floors call for the boxes to sit in the home's normal living conditions before installation; we plan the schedule around what the product requires.

Do you install herringbone?

Yes. Herringbone is laid from a center line so the pattern runs straight through the room, with more cutting at the walls than straight planks. It is quoted after a measure.

Is there a warranty on installation?

Yes. Our crews are insured, and every installation has a 6-month workmanship warranty from the date of installation.
