Can You Put Vinyl Plank Over Tile? When It Works and When the Tile Has to Go

Installing luxury vinyl plank over existing tile: what the tile must be like, grout lines, height at doors and appliances, and when removing the tile is the better call.

Yes, if the tile is a good base

A floating rigid core vinyl plank floor does not care what is under it as long as the base is flat, solid and dry. Well-installed tile is often a very good base.

What the tile has to be like

Flat: no lippage (tile edges higher than their neighbors) beyond what the plank's instructions allow.

Solid: no loose or hollow-sounding tiles and no cracked tiles that move.

Grout lines: narrow lines are usually fine under a rigid core plank; wide or deep lines get filled with floor patch first.

Check height before you commit

Vinyl plank over tile raises the floor by the plank's thickness. Check that doors still swing, the dishwasher can still slide out, and the new floor meets the next room cleanly. A reducer or T-molding handles most changes in height at doorways.

When the tile should come out

Loose or cracked tile, a floor that is uneven, too much height at doors or appliances, or tile on a slab with moisture problems. Then removing the tile and preparing the slab gives a better, longer-lasting floor. Tear-out is priced with the measure.

How we handle it

We check the tile during the measure and tell you whether it can stay. Our own crews install vinyl plank for $1.75 per sq ft over a sound, level slab; tear-out, leveling and trim are quoted after the measure. Call Waco at (254) 332-2272 or Liberty Hill at (512) 355-5120.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put vinyl plank over tile?

Often, yes. If the tile is flat, firmly bonded and not cracked, rigid core vinyl plank can float over it. Wide or deep grout lines may need to be filled first, and the product's installation instructions set the limits.

Do grout lines show through vinyl plank?

They can on thin, flexible vinyl. A rigid core plank bridges narrow grout lines much better. Wider or deeper grout lines are filled with a floor patch so the surface is flat.

Is it cheaper to leave the tile?

Usually. Skipping tile removal saves labor, dust and disposal. But if the tile is loose, cracked or uneven, or the added height causes problems at doors and appliances, removing it is the better job.

How much height does vinyl plank add?

The thickness of the plank and any underlayment: our planks are 5mm, 6.5mm or 8mm. Check door swings, the dishwasher opening and where the floor meets other rooms before deciding.
